PENGASSAN Slams Dangote Refinery for Replacing Nigerians with Indians, Issues Ultimatum.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has accused the $19 billion Dangote Refinery of sacking over 800 Nigerian workers and replacing them with more than 2,000 Indian employees, many of whom allegedly lack proper immigration documents.

In a strongly worded statement on Friday, the union condemned the move, stressing that it would not tolerate any form of disregard for Nigerian workers.

  • “We are deeply saddened to report the unjust termination of over 800 Nigerian workers, whose dedication and service have been integral to the operations of this plant,” PENGASSAN stated.

The union has now issued an ultimatum to the refinery to recall all dismissed Nigerian workers or face legal and constitutional action under Nigeria’s labour laws.

Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery confirmed the dismissal but insisted only a “very small number of staff” were affected, attributing the sackings to acts of sabotage. The management also claimed recruitment was still ongoing.

PENGASSAN, however, remains unconvinced and has summoned an emergency national executive council meeting over the weekend to decide on further action.

This development comes amid ongoing tensions between the refinery and labour unions over the right of workers to unionise.
