Former Chelsea midfielder and Super Eagles legend, John Obi Mikel, has cast doubt on Chelsea’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season, insisting that the Blues lack a world-class goalkeeper.
Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel criticized Chelsea’s decision to stick with Robert Sanchez as their first-choice shot-stopper, describing it as a major weakness in their title pursuit.
According to the ex-midfielder, Chelsea missed a golden opportunity to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain before Manchester City snapped him up during the transfer window.
- “I have said it so many times. We should have brought in a top goalkeeper in the transfer window,” Mikel said.
- “We have seen what Donnarumma is doing now at Manchester City. He was available, and now he is winning those games. It will be incredibly hard for Chelsea to win the league with the goalkeeper we have right now.”

Mikel further pointed out that Pep Guardiola understood the importance of a strong goalkeeper when he replaced Ederson with Donnarumma, who has since proven to be a game-changer at the Etihad.
Donnarumma, recently crowned the Ballon d’Or Best Men’s Goalkeeper, has already made crucial saves for City this season, further justifying Guardiola’s bold move.
Mikel’s comments highlight the growing concerns among Chelsea fans about their squad’s ability to challenge for the EPL title this season.
