Former Arsenal academy player, Billy Vigar, has tragically passed away at the age of 21 after suffering a severe brain injury during a football match.
The incident happened on Saturday during Chichester City’s clash with Wingate & Finchley, leading to the match being abandoned after just 13 minutes of play.
In a heartbreaking statement, his family confirmed that Vigar was placed in an induced coma following the injury and later underwent surgery in a bid to aid his recovery. Sadly, despite medical intervention, he passed away on Thursday morning.
- “After sustaining a significant brain injury last Saturday, Billy Vigar was put in an induced coma. On Tuesday, he needed an operation to aid any chances of recovery. Although this helped, the injury proved too much for him and he passed away on Thursday morning,” the family statement read.

Vigar, who joined Arsenal’s academy at 14, signed his first professional contract with the Gunners in July 2022. He trained with the Arsenal first team at 16 and featured prominently for the club’s Under-18 and Under-21 squads before continuing his football career at a lower league level.
The news of his untimely death has left the Arsenal community and wider football world in mourning, with tributes pouring in for the young forward who was widely regarded as a promising talent.
