Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has distanced himself from a viral statement suggesting that his presidency in 2027 would prioritize Yoruba interests.
Atiku, in a statement issued on Thursday by his Media Adviser, Paul Ibe, disowned a self-proclaimed media consultant, Kola Johnson, who was credited with the publication. He described the claims as “false, offensive, and politically motivated.”
According to Ibe, the so-called consultant is a faceless mercenary allegedly working with elements in the Presidency to spread disinformation and tarnish Atiku’s image ahead of the 2027 general elections.
- “Atiku Abubakar has never engaged one Kola Johnson as a media consultant, aide, or associate. Any statement issued in that name is fake and should be disregarded,” the statement read.
He further urged media houses to verify all information regarding the former Vice President through his official Media Office to avoid amplifying propaganda.
Atiku’s camp described the Yoruba-focused statement as part of a calculated campaign to ridicule him in the media.

The false report had quoted Atiku as assuring South-West stakeholders that their interests would remain central to his policies if elected President, citing his long-standing marital ties to the Yoruba people.
The publication also falsely claimed that Atiku dismissed fears of Hausa/Fulani domination, stressing instead that his marriage to a Yoruba woman in the 1970s and close ties with the region made him “family.”
Atiku’s media team has now clarified that only statements released by his Media Adviser or Special Assistant on Public Communications should be considered authentic.
