Nigerian rap star and music executive Olamide has opened up about his first impression of singer Asake, revealing that he instantly recognized the artist’s unique sound and exceptional talent.

In a recent interview, Olamide admitted that while he did not expect the explosive level of global success Asake would later achieve, he always knew the “Lonely at the Top” hitmaker was special.

• “I did not know he was going to go that wild, but I knew Asake was one of one. From the sound and everything. I had never heard anything like that before—his authenticity and craftsmanship,” Olamide explained.

He praised Asake’s natural drive, describing him as an artist who doesn’t need to be pushed to work hard.

• “Asake is not the dude you try and convince to put in effort because he is already putting effort. That is why I respect him so much. And I thought it would be a nice thing for us to partner,” he said.

These qualities, Olamide said, influenced his decision to sign Asake to his YBNL Nation label in February 2022. He emphasized that his mentorship style is about giving artists creative freedom without pressure.

• “Honestly, I do not put such pressure on my guys. I just tell them to make beautiful music. If it’s awesome, it will fly. It might fly today, tomorrow, or even in 20 years. But good music always lasts,” Olamide noted.

The “Wo” crooner also cited examples of his own songs from over a decade ago that were not instant hits but are now being appreciated.

Asake, who enjoyed an impressive run under YBNL, recently moved on to establish his own record label, Giran Republic, marking a new chapter in his career.
