Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has assured Nigerians that the Yoruba ethnic group will play a central role in his presidency if he emerges victorious in the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, who ran as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the 2023 election, dismissed fears that his government would favour his Fulani kinsmen over other ethnic groups.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his media consultant, Kola Johnson, Atiku emphasized his deep personal and marital ties with the Yoruba people as proof of his commitment to the South-West.
“I count myself extremely lucky to have had a wife from amongst this noble species of the human race. By this token, the bond uniting me and the Yoruba is like the genetic bond of a family. This is why the Yoruba have always occupied a special place in my heart,” Atiku said.
The former vice president stressed that the interests of the Yoruba would always occupy a “topmost place” in his policymaking and governance.
Atiku further dismissed fears of Hausa/Fulani domination, describing them as unfounded:
- “The entire Yoruba stock is my extended family and in-laws. Therefore, the fear that my ascension to the presidency might lead to Hausa/Fulani domination over Yorubas or any other ethnic groups is absolutely unfounded.”
He highlighted his marriage to Titi Abubakar, an Ijesha-born Yoruba woman whom he married in the 1970s, as evidence of his long-standing bond with the South-West.
- “In case you don’t know or have forgotten, I was married to my first wife, Titi, a Yoruba woman, in the 70s, and we have four Yoruba children together. She is now over 75 years old and we are still together. My children with Titi sometimes call me Baba Rere (good father),” he noted.

Atiku described Titi as his “Jewel of Inestimable Value”, adding that some of his closest friends and political allies have always been Yoruba.
- “Anyone who knows me will tell you with sincerity that I am a detribalised person. Even before politics, I related easily with people of diverse tribes, ethnicity, and religion,” he said.
Atiku, who has been a recurring presidential contender since the 1990s, finished second to President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general election.
Political analysts note that the South-West, predominantly Yoruba, has historically played a decisive role in Nigeria’s elections, often serving as the power-balancing region between northern and southern candidates.
