The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued a strong warning to the Nigerian government, alleging that the deteriorating health condition of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, could spark “unimaginable consequences” for Nigeria if not urgently addressed.
In a statement released on Tuesday by IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group accused the Department of State Services (DSS) of deliberately endangering Kanu’s life through prolonged detention and denial of adequate medical care.

According to IPOB, the situation has reached a breaking point, and any further deterioration in Kanu’s health could lead to a crisis with grave consequences for Nigeria and the wider African region. The group likened his continued detention to historic global flashpoints, warning that the current provocation risked plunging the South-East into turmoil.
- “Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is priceless, and no amount of blackmail, judicial rascality, or DSS-induced health crisis will be tolerated. If anything untoward happens to him, Nigeria as presently constituted will cease to exist,” the statement read.
The separatist group also accused the British government of complicity, alleging that London’s “neo-colonial interests” embolden Abuja’s stance on Kanu’s detention. IPOB further condemned what it described as “Igbo collaborators and political jobbers”, vowing that history would vindicate its struggle for Biafra’s independence.
Kanu, who was first arrested in 2015 on charges of treason and terrorism-related offences, was granted bail in 2017 but fled Nigeria. He resurfaced in the UK and Israel before being extraordinarily renditioned from Kenya in 2021, a move IPOB insists violated international law.
Since then, he has remained in DSS custody despite several court orders granting him bail or recommending his transfer to a correctional facility. The Nigerian government has continued to argue that Kanu poses a national security threat.

His detention has fueled persistent unrest in the South-East, including sit-at-home protests, violence, and economic disruptions linked to IPOB activities. Concerns over his health condition have also intensified, with his lawyers and family members repeatedly demanding urgent medical attention.
IPOB called on President Bola Tinubu’s administration, the DSS, and international stakeholders to secure Kanu’s immediate and unconditional release, warning that Nigeria is sitting on a keg of gunpowder if the issue is not resolved.
