A 63-year-old Nigerian man, Anthony Olubunmi George, has finally won his legal battle to remain in the United Kingdom after almost four decades of uncertainty.
George, who arrived in the UK in 1986 at the age of 24, has lived in the country for 38 years without ever returning to Nigeria. Despite never having a criminal record, he endured homelessness, hardship, and multiple rejected immigration applications.

His health took a severe turn in 2019 when he suffered two strokes, leaving him with speech and mobility difficulties. The tribunal heard that George avoided medical treatment earlier out of fear his undocumented status could expose him to deportation, a decision that worsened his condition.
- “I don’t know how many different sofas I’ve slept on, too many to count,” George said, describing his years of hardship.
He also explained that he no longer has close family in Nigeria, making deportation an even harsher reality.
George’s immigration troubles worsened in 2005 when his former solicitor unknowingly submitted a forged passport entry stamp on his behalf. That solicitor has since been struck off the roll and reported to the police.
In his ruling, the immigration judge acknowledged George’s destitution and long history of struggling without family or proper support. The verdict grants him the right to remain in the UK legally.
Overwhelmed by relief, George said:
- “I’m so happy I don’t know what to say. My life has just begun again. Before I didn’t have hope, but now by God’s grace I can move forward with my life.”

Reacting to the decision, his lawyer, Naga Kandiah of MTC Solicitors, said:
- “My client has been living in limbo for almost 40 years, suffered two strokes, and has no family left in Nigeria. This injustice was not only because of Home Office policies but also poor representation from previous solicitors. I am overjoyed with the decision—he has waited nearly four decades for this.”
The ruling marks a major human rights victory, bringing an end to George’s decades-long struggle with the UK’s immigration system.
