Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the removal of fuel subsidy, insisting that the controversial decision was influenced by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.
Speaking during an interview on Politics Today aired on Channels Television, the human rights lawyer argued that no country in the world has completely abolished subsidies. According to him, even advanced economies like the United States, the United Kingdom, and France continue to subsidise vital sectors such as electricity and agriculture.
- “There’s no way you can remove subsidy completely. No country in the entire world has abolished subsidies,” Falana stated. “When the Nigerian Government said it was removing subsidies, the truth is that it was the IMF and World Bank that insisted the government must remove all subsidies.”
Falana also expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s growing dollarisation, lamenting that bribes, official payments, and even rewards from the presidency are now being made in US dollars instead of the naira.

- “The president was announcing gifts to footballers in dollars, not naira. It has to stop. We must promote the naira, not the dollar. As a matter of fact, it is a criminal offence to reject the naira,” he warned.
He called on the federal government to urgently address the trend, stressing that continued reliance on the dollar for transactions undermines the Nigerian economy and violates existing laws.
