The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved a new initiative for the Anambra State Police Command to train local security outfits in the state on professionalism.

The move, according to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, is aimed at improving synergy between community security groups and the Nigeria Police to enhance effectiveness in tackling crime.

Ikenga explained that local security personnel, who possess firsthand knowledge of the terrain and their communities, can provide valuable intelligence to the police. However, he emphasized the need to reform and equip them with modern security skills.

• “These officers are local, so they have quality information to offer the police. Besides, they know their people and the environment better. Training them will yield greater results,” Ikenga said.

He stressed that the training would focus on bridging communication gaps between communities and the police, breaking the “conspiracy of silence” that often hinders information sharing due to fear.

The program will also cover essential skills in public conduct, respect for human rights, instinctive intelligence, and conflict prevention to minimize unnecessary clashes with the public.

Ikenga added that the training was part of wider preparations for the upcoming November 8 governorship election in Anambra, ensuring that local and state-owned security outfits work more professionally in safeguarding the state.
