Burkina Faso Removes Visa Fees for All African Nationals.

September 12, 2025-Published by Cyril

In a landmark move to boost Pan-African solidarity and enhance the free movement of people and goods, the government of Burkina Faso has officially scrapped visa fees for all African citizens.

The announcement was made by Minister of Security, Mahamadou Sana, on Thursday after a cabinet meeting chaired by the country’s military leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré.

  • “From now on, any citizen from an African country wishing to go to Burkina Faso will not pay any amount to cover visa fees,” Sana declared.

Although visa fees have been removed, travellers will still be required to complete an online entry application before approval.

Context of Regional Relations

Citizens of ECOWAS countries already enjoy visa-free access to Burkina Faso. However, the new measure comes amid uncertainty following Burkina Faso’s joint withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) earlier this year, alongside Mali and Niger.

Despite the exit, the Sahelian nation now joins Ghana, Rwanda, and Kenya in adopting policies that simplify African travel, aligning with the African Union’s vision of continental integration.

Promoting Tourism and Culture

According to a statement from the junta’s information service, the visa-free policy for Africans is expected to promote tourism, showcase Burkinabe culture, and improve the country’s global visibility.

Captain Traoré, who seized power in a 2022 coup, has positioned himself as a Pan-Africanist leader opposed to colonial influence and Western dominance. His image and policies have gained significant traction across the continent, particularly on social media.

Security Challenges Remain

Despite these developments, Burkina Faso continues to grapple with Islamist insurgencies, with nearly 40% of its territory reportedly outside government control. The junta has deepened security ties with Russia, but attacks on civilians and soldiers persist, raising questions about the pace of the promised restoration of peace and stability.
