The lingering dispute between the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and Dangote Refinery may be easing after both parties recommitted to their earlier Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a meeting at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in Abuja on Friday.
Sources revealed that stakeholders, including government representatives, prevailed on the union and refinery management to maintain the status quo for two weeks, pending the full implementation of the agreement.

The development comes just days after NUPENG suspended its strike, which had threatened to cripple fuel distribution nationwide. On Tuesday, the union had accused Dangote Refinery of breaching the pact by allegedly obstructing workers’ rights to unionise.
According to the MoU, employees of the refinery and its petrochemical subsidiary are free to join any union of their choice without victimisation. The unionisation process is expected to commence immediately and be completed between September 9 and 22, 2025.
The agreement was signed by representatives of Dangote Group, NUPENG, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Labour leaders, however, cautioned that if the refinery fails to respect the MoU, they would have no choice but to resume industrial action.
The dispute has raised concerns about fuel scarcity, as millions of Nigerians heavily rely on petrol for transportation and power. Analysts warn that any disruption could trigger a surge in the cost of goods and services nationwide.
