South African singer Tyla has emerged winner of the Best Afrobeats Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), leaving her Nigerian counterparts without a win.

Tyla claimed the award with her hit track “Push 2 Start”, edging out top Nigerian nominees including Burna Boy and Ayra Starr, who were among the African acts vying for the category.

Although she secured victory in the Afrobeats category, Tyla lost out in the Best Choreography nomination.

Meanwhile, the night’s biggest winner was Lady Gaga, who clinched four major awards — Artist of the Year, Best Direction, Best Collaboration, and Best Art Direction.

The 2025 VMAs ceremony took place in New York on Sunday night, celebrating outstanding achievements across the global music industry.
