N15tn Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway: Visionary Legacy Project with Massive Economic Benefits – Presidency

The Presidency has defended the N15.6 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, calling it a transformational infrastructure project with huge economic potential for Nigeria.

Speaking on Television Continental (TVC), Sunday Dare, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, emphasized that the highway would boost economic growth, enhance connectivity, and unlock new investment opportunities along Nigeria’s coastline.

Obasanjo Criticizes Coastal Highway, Calls It Wasteful

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently slammed the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, describing it as a wasteful and corrupt venture. In chapter six of his newly released book, Nigeria: Past and Future, Obasanjo also criticized the N21 billion official residence built for Vice President Kashim Shettima, calling it a misplaced priority amid economic hardship.

Obasanjo said, “State resources are captured and appropriated, with a pittance to staff and associates to silence whistleblowers. Typical examples of waste, corruption, and misplaced priorities include the murky Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the new Vice-President’s residence built at a staggering cost of N21bn. What small minds!”

Presidency Defends the Project as an Economic Game-Changer

Responding to the criticism, Sunday Dare argued that the coastal highway would be a game-changer for Nigeria’s economy, similar to transforming the Lekki-Epe corridor under Tinubu’s tenure as Governor of Lagos State.

“When the Lekki-Epe corridor was opened, many people doubted its potential. However, within 15 years, it has become a major economic hub, attracting multi-billion-dollar investments like the Dangote Refinery, the Lagos Free Trade Zone, and a booming real estate market. The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway will have an even bigger impact when completed,” Dare said.
