Abia State Expands Healthcare With Two New Isolation Centres.

September 8, 2025-Published by Cyril

The Abia State Government has unveiled plans to establish two new isolation centres as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and enhance disease control capacity.

The announcement was made on Monday in Umuahia by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, after the State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. He disclosed that one of the new centres will be located at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Aba, while the second will be sited at the Ozuakoli Leprosy Centre.

Kanu assured that Abia’s flagship isolation facility at Amachara Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre remains fully functional, while stressing that there are no confirmed outbreaks of public health concern in the state.

Healthcare Expansion Under Project Ekwueme

The Commissioner highlighted significant progress under the state’s Project Ekwueme Programme, which focuses on revamping healthcare delivery across Abia.

  • 140 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) have been completed, with 33 currently undergoing equipping and functionalisation.
  • The number of functional PHCs is expected to rise to 100 by September 2025.
  • Two cottage hospitals in Abayi and Umuihe communities are ready for commissioning.
  • Facilities like Abayi General Hospital and the SDG Multi-Purpose Hospital at Ugwunagbo are already delivering services.

He further noted that health insurance enrolment in Abia State has surpassed targets, with over 107,000 residents enrolled—a massive leap from the 2025 projection of just 1,000 enrollees.

Education and Community Development

Beyond healthcare, Kanu revealed that the state is also investing in education reform. Renovations are ongoing in 63 public schools, while 340 more schools have been earmarked for immediate upgrade. Newly recruited teachers have undergone intensive training under the Abia First Initiative, focusing on modern teaching methods, classroom management, and inclusive education.

In a recent stakeholders’ meeting with WAEC, NECO, NUT, ANCOPS, PTA, and publishers, the government also resolved to restrict graduation ceremonies to Primary Six pupils and SS3 students in public schools.

Commitment to Abians

The Otti administration has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to accessible, affordable, and modern healthcare for all Abians. These new isolation centres, alongside widespread upgrades to primary and secondary health facilities, are expected to boost epidemic preparedness and improve the overall quality of medical services in the state.
