NUPENG Accuses Dangote of Attempting to Reintroduce Slavery, Insists Monday Strike Will Hold.

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has declared that its planned nationwide strike scheduled for Monday, September 8, 2025, will go ahead despite opposition from stakeholders.

In a strongly worded statement signed by its President, Williams Akporeha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olufemi, the union alleged that Dangote Refinery and its management are attempting to impose “modern-day slavery” on Nigerian workers.

NUPENG emphasized that last week’s directive for members to down tools was in protest against alleged anti-labour practices by the refinery. It accused the management of trying to force tanker drivers into the Direct Trucking Company Drivers Association (DTCDA)—a body the union described as an illegal organisation created by Alhaji Sayyu Aliu Dantata and Alhaji Aliko Dangote to control the workforce for their 10,000 incoming CNG trucks.

  • “Slavery ended centuries ago, but some unscrupulous capitalists are making efforts to bring it back. Any worker who cannot exercise the right of association is no better than a slave,” NUPENG said.

The union insisted that Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) are only legally permitted to join NUPENG, stressing that no Dangote-sponsored association can replace a statutory union.

NUPENG also urged ordinary Nigerians not to support or encourage policies that create slavish working conditions, warning that the fight for workers’ rights in Nigeria must be defended at all costs.
