Recent Attacks in Benue: Protest and Destruction

Senator Zam informed the Senate that on March 10, 2025, suspected bandits disguised as herders invaded Gyaruwa community in Gwer-West LGA, killing four people.

The attack triggered a violent protest by angry youths, frustrated by the government’s failure to protect their community. In their outrage, the youths set fire to the Gwer-West Local Government Secretariat, the paramount ruler’s palace, the private residence of Senator Zam, and homes of other prominent figures.

Zam, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), noted that despite previous motions and legislative efforts, including a Bill on Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment, the security situation in Benue has continued to deteriorate due to a lack of enforcement by the state government.

Food Security at Risk Due to Insecurity

The lawmaker warned that the persistent violent attacks on Gyaruwa community threaten agriculture and food production, putting food security and livelihoods at risk in Benue State.

With the Senate’s renewed intervention, all eyes will be on the security chiefs to present concrete solutions to the crisis.
