Nationwide Strike Looms: FG Summons Dangote, NUPENG for Crisis Talks.

September 7, 2025-Published by Cyril

The Federal Government has waded into the brewing labour crisis, summoning Dangote Group and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) to an emergency meeting scheduled for Monday, September 8.

The intervention, led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, comes amid threats of a nationwide strike by oil workers, who accuse Dangote Refinery and its partners of enforcing an anti-union policy and sidelining workers’ rights.

NUPENG has already announced a total shutdown from Monday, with the backing of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The NLC has also instructed its 54 affiliates and 36 state councils to mobilise in solidarity, describing the struggle as one for the “survival of the Labour movement and the dignity of Nigerian workers.”

If the planned strike goes ahead, it could trigger severe fuel scarcity, economic paralysis, and widespread social unrest, piling further pressure on the Tinubu administration to find a quick resolution.
