The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has smashed a major international drug cartel, intercepting a consignment of cocaine worth over ₦5.3 billion that was headed for Sydney, Australia.
According to NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, the seizure followed a two-week-long intelligence-led operation across Lagos, culminating in multiple arrests and raids. The bust began on August 26, when officers at the Lagos airport export shed intercepted 76 cartons of textile materials bound for Australia. A thorough search uncovered 16 blocks of cocaine weighing 17.9kg, hidden in lace fabrics and concealed with local charms meant to provide “spiritual cover” from detection.
The operation led to the arrest of several cartel leaders, including Ogunbiyi, identified as the syndicate’s Nigerian coordinator. He was picked up in a Lagos hotel on September 3, with subsequent raids yielding 21 parcels of Canadian Loud (10.9kg), a pump-action rifle with cartridges, and more cannabis concealed in vehicles, including a Range Rover SUV and a Toyota Venza. Another cartel leader, Shola Adegoke, previously jailed in the UK for drug trafficking, was also arrested.

Investigations further revealed that the group’s overall ringleader, Adebisi Omoyele (aka Mr. Bee), operates from Dubai, overseeing the cartel’s foreign operations.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (rtd.) praised the agency’s Lagos airport command for the successful operation, urging officers nationwide to sustain the agency’s “balanced approach” in the war against drugs.
