5 Nigerian Universities That Prohibited Sign-Out Ceremonies.

September 7, 2025-Published by Cyril

Sign-out ceremonies have long been a cherished tradition among final-year students in Nigerian universities. Typically, the celebrations involve classmates writing farewell notes on white shirts to mark the end of their campus journey.

However, in recent years, the practice has drawn criticism for encouraging unruly behaviour, accidents, and actions considered undignified. As a result, some institutions have officially banned the ritual to maintain discipline, safety, and the integrity of their graduates.

Here are five schools that have outlawed sign-out celebrations:

  1. Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK)
    Year of Ban: 2025
UNIZIK indefinitely suspended all sign-out events, citing rowdy behaviour, excessive partying, and activities that undermine the dignity of graduates.
  2. Federal University, Lafia (FULafia)
    Year of Ban: 2025
FULafia banned sign-outs at its campus gate after a tragic tricycle accident during a celebration. The school now restricts farewell activities to faculty-controlled areas.

  1. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai
    Year of Ban: 2024
The university outlawed the practice after students engaged in unsafe antics like pouring ink on themselves and staining clothes, which the administration considered harmful and indecorous.
  2. Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUS)
    Year of Ban: 2023
The Sokoto-based university banned unauthorised sign-outs after witnessing disorderly behaviour in previous years, stressing that such actions damage the school’s reputation.
  3. Kaduna Polytechnic (KadPoly)
    Year of Ban: 2024
KadPoly scrapped the celebration completely, describing it as uncultured. The school argued that the ink-staining and graffiti-style practices clashed with its values of discipline and professionalism.
