Tension broke out in Lagos on Saturday as suspected thugs, allegedly backed by policemen, attacked members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) during a political gathering linked to Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the 2023 Labour Party governorship candidate.
According to eyewitness reports, over 40 armed thugs stormed the alternative venue secured for the ADC event after police had earlier sealed off the original venue, Lion Field in Alimosho. In the chaos, Rhodes-Vivour’s personal photographer was macheted, leaving him unconscious before he was later revived.

In a video shared online, Rhodes-Vivour condemned the attack, accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weaponising state institutions to silence opposition voices. He described the incident as a direct assault on democracy, stressing that Lagos belongs to all citizens and not a “select political clique.”
- “It is truly disappointing that the Lagos APC is abusing state institutions by sealing off the venue where the ADC was scheduled to meet after obtaining necessary approvals. This is a calculated attempt to stifle opposition voices in Lagos,” he stated.
He further maintained that intimidation tactics would not weaken the resolve of his movement, which he said is “powered by the people.” Rhodes-Vivour vowed that no amount of harassment would deter them from engaging with Lagosians and pushing for a better future.

Speaking at the sealed venue in Alimosho, he insisted that the police should act as protectors of citizens, not tools of oppression. He emphasised that peaceful assembly is a constitutional right, urging authorities to uphold democratic values.
This latest incident adds to rising concerns about political violence and the shrinking space for opposition parties in Lagos ahead of future elections.
