Cross River PDP Names Tim Ekawu as Consensus Candidate, Rejects Wike’s Influence.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has formally endorsed Tim Ekawu as its chairmanship candidate for the September 27 congress, openly defying the influence of former Rivers State governor and current FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

The endorsement came on Thursday when the caucus of the Central Senatorial District unveiled Ekawu as their preferred candidate. This decision follows a similar move by the Southern Senatorial District caucus, which had also declared support for Ekawu on Wednesday, despite the stance of the state caucus, which is believed to be loyal to Wike.

During the meeting, stakeholders unanimously agreed that Wike, now considered part of the All Progressives Congress (APC), could no longer dictate the affairs of the PDP in the state.

In a communiqué signed by Anthony Edako, the State Secretary of the PDP, the caucus attributed the party’s setbacks to what it described as transactional politics by certain members. They pledged to restore unity, strengthen internal democracy, and work towards reclaiming both Cross River State and the Presidency in 2027.

The communiqué also stated:

Unreserved support for the decisions of the party concerning the date and venue of the national convention.

Full endorsement of Mrs. Amina Darasimi, the PDP National Woman Leader, for her ongoing efforts at repositioning the party in the state.

Commitment to support Anthony Edako to continue as State Secretary in the upcoming congresses.

The caucus concluded by affirming its backing of Tim Ekawu as the next Cross River State PDP chairman, describing him as a candidate who can provide the calm and level-headed leadership the party urgently needs.

  • “The PDP, after four years, requires the steady and unifying leadership that Tim Ekawu brings to the table,” the communiqué read.
