The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has directed retired Nigerian soldiers staging a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters in Abuja to vacate the premises immediately.
The ex-soldiers, who voluntarily exited the Army in 2024, had stormed the ministry on Thursday, accusing the government of failing to pay their long-overdue entitlements. They also alleged prolonged neglect by the authorities despite repeated assurances.

Addressing the development, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, said the protest was disrupting government activities at the ministry.
- “While the Defence Headquarters acknowledges the right to legitimate protest, the veterans are strongly advised to tread with caution and vacate the premises of the Federal Ministry of Finance to allow government functions to continue seamlessly,” Kangye stated.
He stressed that the directive was necessary to restore order while assuring that the military remains committed to its constitutional responsibilities.

“Let me reaffirm that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to their mandate of defending the nation’s territorial integrity, supporting civil authorities in maintaining internal security, and ensuring peace and stability across all regions,” Kangye added.
The order comes just hours after the retired soldiers resumed their protest over unpaid benefits. This situation has triggered repeated demonstrations in Abuja and other parts of the country in recent months.
