Retired Military Pensioners Protest Unpaid Benefits at Finance Ministry.

September 4, 2025 — Published by Cyril

A group of retired Nigerian soldiers on Thursday staged a protest at the Federal Ministry of Finance in Abuja, blocking the main entrance over the alleged delay in releasing funds to the Military Pensions Board (MPB) for payment of their outstanding entitlements.

The aggrieved ex-servicemen said the protest was necessary after officials of the ministry failed to honor earlier assurances that their benefits would be paid by August 10, 2025.

NAIJABLOGDAILY recalls that the pensioners had previously suspended a similar demonstration on August 4, following a meeting with officials from the Ministries of Defence and Finance. During that meeting, they were promised that the backlog of pensions would be cleared before mid-August.

Pensioners Decry Government Neglect

Speaking to journalists during the protest, one of the leaders, identified as Mama G, accused the government of reneging on its commitments.

  • “We are here because the promises made to us were never fulfilled. We had no choice but to return to the streets. This time around, the protest will be massive,” she said.

The senior citizens lamented that pension delays have become a recurring challenge, forcing them to repeatedly take to the streets in Abuja and other Nigerian cities to demand justice.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ministry of Defence, the Defence Headquarters, nor the Military Pensions Board had issued an official response to the protest.
