Enugu State was thrown into mourning on Wednesday after multiple road accidents involving Dangote Group trucks and other cement-laden trailers claimed several lives, including an entire family, along the busy Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.
Eyewitnesses reported that a trailer belonging to the Dangote Group crushed a family’s car beyond recognition at the Four Corner Junction, Ozalla. Videos circulating online showed the mangled remains of the vehicle, sparking outrage and renewed calls for stricter regulation of heavy-duty trucks on Nigerian highways.

The tragic incident comes just days after Ruth, the sister of BBNaija winner Phyna, died from injuries sustained in another crash involving a Dangote truck. Following her death, activist VeryDarkMan intensified his campaign against what he described as the reckless operations of Dangote drivers, alleging that some even drive without valid licences.
According to the Enugu State Police Command, two separate crashes involving cement trucks occurred on Wednesday, leaving 10 people dead and 10 others hospitalised.
The first accident happened around 9 a.m., when a Howo truck marked Visco Investment Global, carrying cement from Aba to Abuja, collided with a Toyota Corolla attempting to overtake another vehicle. A Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet mini bus, both driving against traffic, were also caught in the collision.
The impact sparked a fire that engulfed the Corolla, killing all five occupants, while one passenger in the minibus also died instantly.
Barely hours later, around 3 p.m., a Sino truck belonging to Global Investment, also laden with cement, rammed into a tricycle while driving against traffic. All four tricycle passengers later died in the hospital, while several others sustained severe injuries.
Police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe confirmed that 10 injured victims were rushed to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ituku-Ozalla, where they are receiving treatment.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the accidents as “avoidable” and extended condolences to the grieving families.

- “Drivers must understand that no journey is worth a single life. Recklessness and disregard for traffic rules are recipes for disaster. As we enter the Ember months, I urge motorists to exercise utmost caution,” Giwa stated.
The repeated involvement of Dangote trucks in fatal crashes has triggered heated conversations nationwide, with Nigerians demanding tougher enforcement of road safety laws to end the rising carnage caused by heavy-duty vehicles.
