Tragedy struck on Monday at Ibeju Bus Stop along the busy Lekki–Epe Expressway as a devastating road accident claimed six lives and left nine others seriously injured.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the incident, stating that it involved a blue Volvo FL6 truck carrying wooden planks and a white commercial bus with registration number AKD 336 YD.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and reckless driving.
Among the deceased were two men, three women, and a child. Their remains have been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) morgue in Epe, awaiting identification by relatives.
Nine survivors, including three men and six women, were rescued with the swift intervention of LASTMA, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC). They were rushed to FMC Epe and Hammond Hospital for emergency treatment, while four passengers escaped without injuries.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended condolences to the bereaved families and urged motorists to embrace discipline and defensive driving, especially during the Ember Months, when road accidents are known to spike.
- “Speed thrills but kills,” he warned, stressing that most crashes result from human recklessness and poor judgment rather than mystical causes.
Bakare-Oki also praised the coordinated response of emergency agencies and reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to ensuring safer roads across Lagos State.
