Resident Doctors Hand Government 10-Day Ultimatum, Threaten Nationwide Strike.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has issued a fresh 10-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, warning that failure to meet its demands will result in a nationwide strike.

In a communiqué signed by NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara; General Secretary, Dr. Oluwasola Odunbaku; and Publicity and Social Secretary, Dr. Omoha Amobi, the doctors said the decision followed an Extraordinary National Executive Council (E-NEC) meeting held virtually on Sunday.

Outstanding Demands

NARD recalled that it had earlier given a three-week ultimatum in July, later extending it by another three weeks to allow room for dialogue. However, the association lamented that the government’s promises remain unfulfilled.

Key grievances include:

  • Non-payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) to many members.
  • Five months’ arrears from the 25–35% Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) review.
  • Non-payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance.
  • “Unjust downgrading” of postgraduate membership certificates of the West African Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN).
  • Delays in the issuance of certificates by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN).

State-Level Concerns

At the state level, the doctors accused the Kaduna State Government of failing to honour agreements reached with members at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital despite signed MoUs. They also faulted the Oyo State Government for neglecting welfare concerns at LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomosho, where an indefinite strike is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the association commended states that have paid the 2025 MRTF but insisted that urgent action is needed nationwide.

Final Ultimatum

Among its demands, NARD called for immediate payment of the 2025 MRTF, settlement of outstanding CONMESS arrears, payment of the 2024 Accoutrement Allowance, recognition of West African postgraduate certificates, and prompt issuance of membership certificates by NPMCN.

“The E-NEC extends the ultimatum by a final 10 days to all relevant government agencies to meet these demands. Failure to do so by Wednesday, September 10, 2025, will leave us with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the communiqué stated.
