Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Thursday unveiled the fully revamped Nigergas Company Limited, restored to operation after lying dormant for over three decades.
Mbah revealed that the plant has already created over 100 direct jobs for skilled and semi-skilled workers, and is projected to generate more than 5,000 indirect jobs across fabrication, distribution, transport, and supply chains.

Established in 1962 under the leadership of Dr. Michael Okpara, Nigergas had been abandoned due to years of mismanagement and poor governance. Mbah said its revival is proof of his administration’s commitment to rebuilding moribund assets and driving his vision of expanding Enugu State’s GDP from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
“What we have revived and unveiled today is not simply metal and pipes; it is the restoration of purpose, dignity, and productivity to a facility that once symbolised Eastern Nigeria’s industrial promise,” the governor stated.
- Expanded Capacity and Future Plans
- The upgraded facility now produces:
- 100 cubic metres of oxygen per hour
- 45 cubic metres of acetylene per hour
The governor further disclosed plans to roll out nitrogen, argon gas, carbon dioxide, and CNG stations, boosting local supply for hospitals, welders, agro-processors, and manufacturers.
He explained that the plant will ensure steady access to medical oxygen, lower operational costs for industries, and strengthen the state’s MSME sector.
Commendations and Reactions
Stakeholders praised Governor Mbah’s achievement:
Dr. Joy Uduji hailed him as the “Nehemiah of our time” for rebuilding abandoned assets.
Kanayo O. Kanayo, a Nollywood veteran, said security in Enugu has improved significantly, allowing film productions to run safely into the night.

Dr. Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, MD of Enugu State Investment Authority, applauded the revival, noting that the plant had been crippled for over 30 years due to corruption and weak management.
The project was executed in collaboration with Ten Gas Development Ltd, a division of INDEV GROUP, and local community stakeholders in Emene.
Economic Impact
- Governor Mbah stressed that Nigergas’ restoration will:
- Provide a reliable oxygen supply to hospitals.
- Support industrial growth and MSMEs.
- Create thousands of job opportunities.
- Expand Enugu’s revenue base.
He concluded that the revival is not just about restoring a factory but about building a diversified, self-sustaining economy that improves lives and makes Enugu a hub for industrial activity.
