Veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has reignited the national conversation around the ownership and identity of Lagos State by boldly declaring that the city belongs to no single tribe—comparing it directly to New York City in the United States.

Speaking during an interview with News Central TV, the convener of the Our Mumu Don Do movement described Lagos as a “melting pot” of ethnicities, culture, and diversity, stating it should be seen as a shared space for all Nigerians.

• “This is our first capital, so it has people from different ethnic groups who make Lagos really bubble,” he said. “If you are looking at it from that perspective, yes, it feels like America—the melting pot of lots of immigrant people… Lagos is like the New York of Nigeria.”

Charly Boy’s remarks come in the wake of a recent controversy surrounding the renaming of a major bus stop in Bariga, formerly named after him, to Olamide Baddo—honouring hip-hop star Olamide Adedeji. The decision was made by the Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and has sparked reactions on social media and beyond.

He criticized the move, suggesting that the Lagos State Government is engaging in “tribal politics” and acting out of fear rather than unity.

“They’re jittery, playing tribal politics instead of embracing the diversity that makes Lagos vibrant.”

Charly Boy, fondly known as Area Fada, remains one of Nigeria’s most outspoken cultural icons, and his stance is likely to stir further debate over the true identity and ownership of Nigeria’s commercial capital.
