The Super Falcons of Nigeria have secured a place in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after a thrilling 2–1 victory over defending champions, South Africa.
Nigeria started the game on the front foot, coming close to breaking the deadlock within the opening 12 minutes. Chiwendu Ihezuo almost found the back of the net in the 11th minute after a brilliant pass from Ashleigh Plumptre, but South African goalkeeper Andile Dlamini pulled off an incredible save. Just a minute later, Esther Okoronkwo’s goal-bound strike was also stopped by the alert Dlamini.
Despite South Africa’s smooth ball movement in midfield, they rarely troubled Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The breakthrough for the Falcons came a minute before halftime when Bomgeka Gamede handled the ball inside the box, earning Nigeria a penalty. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up and converted confidently, although Dlamini managed to get a hand on the ball.
South Africa drew level on the hour mark, with Linda Motlhalo converting a penalty to make it 1–1.
However, the Super Falcons had the final say. In stoppage time, Nigeria’s right-back unleashed a sensational long-range strike to seal a dramatic 2–1 victory and secure a spot in the final.
