President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that the history of the Yoruba race would have been incomplete had he failed in the 2023 presidential election.
Tinubu made the remarks on Sunday during the 8th day of Fidau prayers for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
Awujale’s Influence on Tinubu’s Political Journey
The President revealed that the late monarch had personally encouraged him to run for the presidency, offering his blessings and unwavering support.
“Our history would not have been completed carefully and richly if I had failed in the last election. I was successful because of your support and the blessing of the late Awujale,” Tinubu said.

A Monarch of Great Legacy
Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. Known for his integrity and forthrightness, he shared a close friendship with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, a relationship that dated back to the 1980s.
The passing of both leaders — Buhari and Adetona — within hours of each other has drawn national mourning and tributes across the country.
