Emerging Best Among 7,000 Candidates Reward For My Resilience – First-Class Law School Graduate.

Nigeria’s Best Graduating Law Student, Oluwabusayo Ifonlaja, has shared insights into his journey of resilience, discipline, and focus that led to his outstanding performance at the Nigerian Law School, Lagos Campus, where he emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student out of over 7,000 candidates.

In an interview with Temitope Adetunji, Ifonlaja recounted his early education in Ikenne Remo, Ogun State, where he consistently excelled in academics, winning awards such as “Boy of the Year” during his primary school graduation. He is 23 years old and the third child in his family, with siblings who have been a significant source of support.

Early Passion for Law

Ifonlaja’s interest in law started early, driven by his admiration for lawyers who stood for justice. “Studying law wasn’t just a career path for me, it was a calling with deep purpose,” he said. He graduated from Nile University in 2023 and proceeded to the Nigerian Law School in January 2024, completing his bar final exams in November 2024. He was officially called to the Bar in July 2025.

Family Support and Sacrifice

Despite exploring other career dreams, such as medicine and engineering, Ifonlaja’s parents nurtured his passion for law. “My dad never bought me toys; to him, books were my toys,” he revealed. Their emphasis on discipline and education helped him stay focused on his goals.

Law School Experience

Transitioning from Nile University to the Nigerian Law School, Ifonlaja described the experience as intense but transformative. He adopted a strict routine, studying from early mornings to late nights while balancing group meetings and library sessions. “There’s no magic trick. It was all about planning, managing my time well, and working hard,” he noted.

His consistent performance, particularly on platforms like LawSchoolPaddi, where he topped weekly quizzes, made him confident of finishing among the top graduates.

Awards and Achievements

At his Call to Bar, Ifonlaja won 18 awards, including six campus awards and four external awards, with the Council of Legal Education Star Prize being his most cherished recognition. “It was emotional, especially because I received it with my parents on stage,” he said.

Challenges and Resilience

Ifonlaja admitted to facing moments of self-doubt, burnout, and loneliness but leaned on his faith, prayers, and emotional support from family and peers to push through. “Law School is demanding, not just academically but emotionally. The personal battles remain behind the scenes,” he explained.

Vision for Legal Education

While praising Nigeria’s legal education for its strong theoretical foundation, he emphasized the need for more practical training, mentorship, and real-world exposure. “If I could change one thing, I would include practical training and mentorship in the main curriculum from the university level,” he stated.
