Abuja, Nigeria — Thursday, July 17, 2025
The Nigerian Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed claims by Turkish Ambassador-designate to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, that members of the Fethullah Terrorist Organisation (FETO) are operating in the country under the guise of educational and healthcare institutions.
Poroy made the allegation during an event in Abuja to mark Turkey’s Democracy and National Unity Day, insisting that FETO-linked individuals remain active in Nigeria.
DHQ Responds: “Unofficial Announcement”
Addressing journalists on Thursday, Major General Markus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, described the ambassador’s claim as unofficial and unsubstantiated.
- “Information from the person you are talking about, as far as Defence Headquarters is concerned, is an unofficial announcement. Everybody is free to say whatever they want. There is freedom of information,” Kangye stated.

He stressed that Nigeria is an independent, sovereign nation capable of safeguarding its interests without succumbing to foreign narratives.
Warning Against Foreign Interference
Kangye cautioned against spreading unverified statements that could undermine Nigeria’s national integrity or incite unnecessary suspicion, adding that the country’s intelligence and security architecture remains vigilant against all threats.
