Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), citing irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s founding principles.
In a resignation letter dated July 14, 2025, addressed to the Chairman of PDP Jada 1 Ward in Adamawa State, Atiku confirmed his immediate withdrawal from the party.
- “I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated in the letter.
Why Atiku Left PDP
The former Vice President, who served from 1999 to 2007 and twice contested the presidency under the PDP, expressed gratitude for the opportunities the party gave him but explained that the party had strayed from its core values.
- “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life,” he wrote.
- “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision. I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Atiku described his decision as painful but necessary, pointing to irreconcilable differences and the party’s departure from the ideals he once championed.
