The remains of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, have arrived in Daura, Katsina State, for his final burial, following his death in London on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.
Earlier today, Buhari’s body was flown into the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina aboard a Nigerian Air Force military aircraft. He was received with full state honours by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda, and members of Buhari’s family.

A solemn road procession followed as the former president’s remains were transported by ambulance to his hometown of Daura. The streets were lined with mourners—men, women, and children—who came out in reverence, waving flags, reciting prayers, and capturing photos of the historic moment.
Buhari, who ruled Nigeria as a military Head of State from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, is being buried per Islamic rites at his private residence in Daura.
Final Journey of Muhammadu Buhari
At approximately 2:00 p.m., a military aircraft carrying Buhari’s body landed in Katsina. A military honour guard stood at attention as the flag-draped casket was solemnly received by top federal and state officials, close allies, and family members.
Vice President Shettima, who led the delegation from the UK, stood alongside President Tinubu and Governor Radda at the airport tarmac. First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu was also present, underlining the high-profile nature of the event.
From there, the casket was placed in a specially prepared hearse, and a heavily guarded convoy began the drive to Daura. The atmosphere was marked by silent mourning and visible respect.
In Daura, security was tight, and arrangements for the Janazah (Islamic burial prayer) were already in place. Thousands of mourners, including emirs, governors, foreign diplomats, political leaders, and everyday Nigerians, converged in the town to say their final goodbyes.

A National Moment of Farewell
Despite ongoing debates around his legacy, today marked a unifying moment for the country. Across Nigeria, many paused to reflect on the life and service of the man affectionately called “Mai Gaskiya”—Hausa for “The Honest One.”
Buhari’s burial, set against the backdrop of his hometown’s dusty roads and age-old traditions, highlighted the simplicity and humility he often espoused.
As the earth covered his grave, a chapter in Nigeria’s history quietly closed, leaving behind a legacy of decades of political service, military contributions, and a lifetime dedicated to public life.
