Senate Leader Bamidele Pays Tribute to Late President Buhari, Awujale of Ijebuland.

ABUJA –

Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, has paid heartfelt tributes to late former President Muhammadu Buhari and the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Ogbagba II), describing both as “towering symbols of unity, peace, and national stability.”

In a statement released on Monday in Abuja, Senator Bamidele reflected on the legacies of the two national figures who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025 — Buhari at age 82, and Oba Adetona at 91.

🕯 Buhari: Defender of Integrity and National Reform

The Senate Leader praised Muhammadu Buhari for his unwavering service to Nigeria both as Military Head of State (1984–1985) and as democratically elected President (2015–2023).

“Buhari epitomised discipline, personal integrity, and strong leadership. His legacy includes a principled fight against corruption and efforts to reposition Nigeria on the path of justice and national renewal,” Bamidele said.

He recalled Buhari’s transition into democratic politics, citing his presidential runs under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), the formation of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), and his eventual role in the historic formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which secured electoral victory in 2015.

Senator Bamidele extended his condolences to:

  • Former First Lady Aisha Buhari
  • Buhari’s children and family
  • Daura Emirate Council
  • Katsina State Government
  • President Bola Ahmed Tinubu
  • The South-West Caucus of the Nigerian Senate

👑 Oba Adetona: A Monarch of Peace and Progress

On the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Senator Bamidele described Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years (from January 1960 to July 2025), as one of Nigeria’s most respected and apolitical monarchs.

“Oba Adetona was a defender of royal values, a unifier across religious and political divides, and a symbol of stability throughout Nigeria’s military and democratic eras,” the Senate Leader noted.

He lauded the monarch’s leadership in promoting peace, inclusiveness, and development within the Ijebu Kingdom, Ogun State, and across Nigeria.

Bamidele condoled with:

  • The Anikilaya Ruling House
  • People of Ijebuland
  • Ogun State Government
