Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 general elections, has claimed that former President Muhammadu Buhari died from leukemia, a form of blood cancer.
Sowore made the revelation in a post on his verified Facebook page, where he stated bluntly:
“Buhari died of (BLOOD CANCER) Leukemia.”
According to Naija Blog Daily, Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2023, after a long battle with an undisclosed illness. His death came two years after completing his tenure as Nigeria’s president in May 2023.
While the Nigerian government has not issued an official statement confirming the exact cause of death, Sowore’s comment has generated widespread attention and renewed public interest in the health history of the late president.

Buhari’s Long-Standing Health Concerns
Throughout his presidency, Muhammadu Buhari has been subject to intense speculation over his health, especially following several medical trips to the United Kingdom during his administration.
Although details were often kept from the public, the former president spent months abroad on medical leave, prompting criticism from civil society groups and political figures, including Sowore, for the lack of transparency.
The new revelation by Sowore has reignited debates over accountability and health disclosure among public officials in Nigeria.
