President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a special emergency Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting to be held on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in a UK hospital on Sunday.
In a personally signed tribute released shortly after the announcement of Buhari’s death, President Tinubu described the loss as a moment of national mourning and deep sorrow.
“President Buhari was to the very core, a patriot, a soldier, a statesman,” Tinubu wrote. “His legacy of service and sacrifice endures.”
🇳🇬 Seven Days of National Mourning, Full State Funeral
Tinubu has ordered that national flags fly at half-staff for seven days beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025, across Nigeria as a sign of respect for the deceased statesman.
“As a mark of respect to our former leader, I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” Tinubu stated.
He also confirmed that former President Buhari would be accorded full state honours, with funeral arrangements to reflect his towering legacy and contributions to Nigeria.
🕊 A Life of Patriotism and Sacrifice
Reflecting on Buhari’s life and career, Tinubu noted that the late president served Nigeria with “unwavering dedication”—first as a military head of state (1984–1985) and later as a democratically elected president (2015–2023).
- “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”
The President praised Buhari’s anti-corruption efforts, emphasis on discipline in public service, and his sacrifice for national unity.
🏡 Condolences to Aisha Buhari, Daura Community
Tinubu also offered heartfelt condolences to Aisha Buhari, the former First Lady, their children, and the entire Buhari family. He extended sympathies to the government and people of Katsina State, particularly the Daura Emirate, Buhari’s hometown.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus. And may his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness.”
