Nigeria’s former President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. His death was confirmed by his former spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, in a statement released on Sunday, July 13, 2025.
According to Shehu, Buhari passed away in a private hospital in London, United Kingdom, after a prolonged illness.
- “The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London,” the statement read.
- “May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus.”
🇳🇬 A Legacy of Service: Military to Civilian Presidency
Born in 1942, Buhari first came to national prominence as Nigeria’s military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
He later served as Executive Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF) in 1994 under the regime of late General Sani Abacha, where he oversaw large-scale infrastructure investments across the country.
Buhari contested presidential elections in 2003, 2007, and 2011, but only succeeded in 2015, when he made history by defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan—the first time in Nigeria’s democracy that a sitting president lost an election.
He was re-elected in 2019 and completed his two-term presidency in 2023.
