Senate President Godswill Akpabio has officially handed over the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State to Governor Umo Eno, marking a major political shift in the state’s party structure.

The symbolic handover took place during the first APC Stakeholders’ Meeting held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Uyo.

Speaking at the gathering, Governor Eno described the move as a merger, not an acquisition, urging party leaders from the ward to the state level to embrace the transition in the spirit of unity and inclusiveness.

“This is a merger, and as the Senate President has said, we must approach it with love, unity, and understanding. There has to be some sacrifices from both ends,” Eno stated.

• He cautioned against unnecessary entry barriers into the party, emphasizing that the APC in Akwa Ibom should be open and welcoming to all.

• “We’ve heard reports that some ward leaders are demanding requirements from new members as if it’s a marriage ceremony. That must stop. We should be happy that Akwa Ibom State is becoming united, and we are all better for it,” he said.

Governor Eno pledged full cooperation with the APC leadership and reiterated his commitment to the party’s vision, promising to contribute meaningfully to its growth in the state.

“I am here to work with you and for the good of our people. We will give you the honour you deserve and promote the APC’s values under the ARISE Agenda,” he added.

In his remarks, Senate President Akpabio hailed Governor Eno as a unifier and visionary leader whose governance has brought peace and stability to the state. He emphasized that his role as Senate President is to support the governor, not dominate him, to protect Akwa Ibom’s interests at the national level.

“This is a merger, not an acquisition. Let’s work together for the state’s progress and unity. My position is to ensure that Akwa Ibom thrives, not to lord it over the Governor,” Akpabio stated.

Akpabio also announced a modified APC slogan that reflects the new spirit of unity, love, and progress in the state’s political landscape.

APC Leaders Endorse Governor Eno’s Leadership

The Akwa Ibom APC Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo, praised Governor Eno’s leadership style, saying it has transformed the state into a peaceful and inclusive political environment. He urged members to rally behind the governor for the overall growth of the APC in Akwa Ibom.

Other party leaders, including APC State Woman Leader, Obonganwan Obonodo Uko, Youth Leader, Dr. Clement Awakessien, and Chapter and Ward Chairmen, also applauded Governor Eno’s inclusive approach, noting that even before joining the APC, he empowered many of their members.

They pledged their unwavering support for the governor’s ARISE Agenda, promising to work together to realize his vision for Akwa Ibom.

The high-level meeting was attended by members of the State Executive Council, top political figures, and APC stakeholders from across Akwa Ibom.
