Spanish authorities have confirmed that Diogo Jota, the late Liverpool and Portugal forward, was likely behind the wheel and speeding at the time of the fatal car crash that claimed his life and that of his brother, André Silva.
The incident occurred in the Zamora province of northwestern Spain in the early hours of Thursday, when the Lamborghini they were driving reportedly suffered a tyre blowout before crashing and bursting into flames.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Spanish police said:
“The marks left by one of the Lamborghini’s tyres and all the tests carried out so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle was Diogo Jota.”

Officials believe speeding played a key role in the accident. However, the intensity of the fire, which nearly incinerated the car, has significantly hindered the investigation.
- Authorities also noted that the accident did not occur at a known danger zone, clarifying that the location is not listed as a road “black spot.”
The football world continues to mourn the shocking death of the 27-year-old player, who was a vital part of Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team.
