The United States government has announced a significant change to its visa policy for Nigeria, affecting most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to Nigerian citizens.
According to a statement released by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the new visa regime takes effect from Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
Under the updated policy, most Nigerian applicants will now be issued single-entry U.S. visas valid for only three months, a sharp shift from the previous multiple-entry visas that allowed longer stays and repeat visits.

The change is part of the U.S. State Department’s reciprocity policy, which ensures that visa conditions granted to foreign nationals match what U.S. citizens experience when applying for visas to those countries.
- “Effective immediately, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the embassy said.
- “Visas issued before July 8, 2025, will retain their validity and terms.”
The embassy clarified that the revision does not affect individuals who already possess a valid U.S. visa issued before the new policy date.
The statement also noted that the policy is subject to further changes, and countries are regularly reviewed for compliance with global security and travel standards.
Key U.S. Visa Criteria Cited in the New Policy:
- Secure Travel Documents: Ensuring passports are secure and traveler identities are verified.
- Visa Overstay Management: Implementing systems to minimize the number of travelers who remain in the U.S. after their visa expires.
- Information Sharing: Cooperation in sharing criminal and security-related data to enhance public safety.

Despite the shift, the U.S. Mission in Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening ties between both nations.
- “The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity.”
- Nigerians are advised to ensure that their travel documents are authentic, valid, and accurate, and to adhere strictly to the terms of their visas.
The U.S. also highlighted its continued support for educational, cultural, and business exchanges between the two countries.
