Nuclear Test Ban: No Going Back – VP Kashim Shettima Declares.

ABUJA —

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated Nigeria’s firm opposition to nuclear weapons testing, emphasizing that the nation remains fully committed to a world free of nuclear threats.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a high-level meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), Dr. Robert Floyd, Shettima stated that Africa’s priorities lie in tackling poverty and climate change, not in pursuing nuclear capabilities.

  • “The outcome of any nuclear conflict is never a win-win situation; it is always the opposite,” the Vice President warned.
  • “We are fighting poverty and a war against the relationship between the economy and ecology in sub-Saharan Africa. We have no business dabbling in anything that has to do with nuclear weapons.”

Nigeria’s Commitment to Global Peace

Nigeria remains a signatory to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and continues to advocate for peace, disarmament, and responsible global cooperation. Shettima assured the CTBTO that Nigeria’s position on nuclear non-proliferation is resolute and irreversible.

The Vice President also praised the CTBTO for its civilian-focused contributions, especially its role in detecting tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, and seismic activities, which support global environmental and disaster preparedness.

“We commend the CTBTO for playing a vital role beyond nuclear testing—especially in helping monitor and protect our ecosystem,” Shettima noted.

Africa Focused on Development, Not Weapons

Shettima stressed that for Nigeria and many other African nations, the true war is against poverty, inequality, and climate-induced disasters. He urged international stakeholders to focus on partnerships that empower the continent economically and environmentally, rather than militarily.
