The Chairman of Gumel Local Government Area in Jigawa State, Honourable Lawal Ya’u, has passed away at the age of 61.

Sources close to the family confirmed that the respected council boss died on Saturday afternoon at a private hospital in Kano following a brief illness.

Until his death, Lawal Ya’u was a dedicated public servant and grassroots politician who was elected chairman of Gumel LGA in August 2024. Before venturing into politics, he had served diligently in the Jigawa State civil service.

A family spokesperson revealed that Ya’u is survived by two wives and several children.

The late chairman was laid to rest in his hometown, Gumel, on Saturday evening according to Islamic burial rites.

His death has been described as a great loss to the people of Gumel and the entire Jigawa political community.
