Nigerian Guild of Editors Suspends Steve Osuji Over Breach of Confidentiality.

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has suspended prominent journalist and veteran editor, Mr. Steve Osuji, for one year following what it termed a serious breach of journalistic ethics and professional conduct.

In a disciplinary letter dated July 4, 2025, and signed by the Guild’s President, Eze Anaba, and General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, the suspension took immediate effect. The Guild accused Osuji of violating an off-the-record agreement during the 25th Biennial National Convention of the Guild, held in Enugu on June 27.

According to the Guild, Osuji disclosed confidential information shared by the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, during a closed-door presentation meant strictly for members under a non-disclosure agreement (NDA).

  • “During the investigation into your actions, you were given an opportunity to defend yourself. However, instead of acknowledging your mistake, you threatened the Guild with further publications,” the letter stated.

Ethical Breach and Disciplinary Action

The NGE Standing Committee, which includes leading editors from all geopolitical zones of Nigeria, approved the disciplinary action. The Guild emphasized that the suspension was necessary to maintain the integrity of the journalism profession and to reinforce the importance of trust and confidentiality in sensitive briefings.

Right to Appeal

While Mr. Osuji reserves the right to appeal the decision, the Guild issued a stern reminder to its members that ethical breaches and violations of journalistic codes will be met with firm disciplinary measures.
