Court Finds Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Guilty of Contempt Over Facebook Post.

The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday found Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, guilty of contempt of court over a satirical apology post on Facebook dated April 27.

Delivering the ruling, Justice Binta Nyako said the controversial post violated an earlier court order that restrained all parties from making public or social media comments concerning the ongoing case related to Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension from the Senate.

Senate President Akpabio Filed a Contempt Application

The contempt proceedings stemmed from an application filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who alleged that the senator’s Facebook post was a direct breach of the court’s gag order.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s legal team argued that the post in question was not related to the suspension case, but rather addressed separate sexual harassment allegations involving the third respondent (Akpabio). However, Justice Nyako dismissed this claim.

  • “After reviewing the post and the facts before the court, I am satisfied that the Facebook publication is linked to the ongoing suspension case,” Justice Nyako ruled.
  • Court Imposes Fine and Orders Public Apology
  • In addition to finding the senator in contempt, the court ordered her to:
  • Publish a formal apology in two national newspapers
  • Republish the apology on her Facebook page
  • Pay a N5 million fine

The court directed that these actions must be completed within seven days from the date of judgment.

This ruling follows a series of legal battles between the senator and the Senate leadership over her six-month suspension, which she is also currently challenging in court.
