Fresh cracks have emerged within the Labour Party (LP) as the Julius Abure-led faction has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi to formally resign from the party following his move to join a new political coalition alliance.
In a fiery statement released in Abuja on Thursday, and signed by the Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party distanced itself from the newly formed coalition, describing its members as “recycled politicians,” “power mongers,” and “opportunists”.

“The Labour Party is not available for people with dual agenda. Anyone who claims to be LP in the morning and coalition member at night has no place in our structure,” Ifoh said.
“Peter Obi Must Leave the Labour Party”
The Abure-led faction accused Peter Obi of holding nocturnal meetings with LP members to persuade them to join his new political alliance, but said many refused to follow him.
- “Peter Obi has 48 hours to resign if he wants to be part of the coalition,” Ifoh warned.
He emphasized that the “New Nigeria” dream frequently touted by Obi cannot be realized through an alliance filled with “old, desperate, and failed politicians.”
- “These are the same individuals who ruined Nigeria for years. They cannot birth a new nation,” he added.
Party Rejects Coalition, Says “New Nigeria” Only Possible Through Labour Party
The party reiterated that it will not be part of the anti-Tinubu opposition coalition, which includes political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, David Mark, and others who recently joined forces under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
“Labour Party remains the only platform for Nigeria’s over 70% youth population who are tired of gerontocrats and failed systems,” Ifoh said.
