As political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed it received 12 new applications from groups seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number of applicants to 122.
The development was disclosed in a statement on Thursday, July 3, by Mr. Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee.
“The Commission is processing these applications transparently and in fairness to all applicants,” Olumekun assured.
⚠ Defections Among Unregistered Associations
INEC revealed a surprising twist in the ongoing registration process: an interim secretary of one association ‘defected’ to another association, even though both groups are yet to be formally registered as political parties.
- “This inconsistency in leadership within the associations may unnecessarily delay the processing of their applications,” the statement warned.
🗳 INEC Urges Consistency and Patience
INEC called on all associations to maintain consistency in leadership and addresses, stressing that internal changes could hamper or delay registration approvals.
- “We appeal to associations to avoid actions that might hinder the timely consideration of their applications,” Olumekun added.
📝 Electoral Act Compliance and New Guidelines
The Commission also clarified interpretations of Section 65 of the Electoral Act 2022, which allows INEC to review declarations and returns in elections not made in compliance with electoral laws and guidelines.
To aid transparency and uniformity:
Supplementary Guidelines No. 1 have been released as an update to the 2022 Regulations for Election Conduct.

🔍 Full List of Applicants Published
INEC has uploaded the full list of the 122 associations seeking registration—including their names, acronyms, addresses, and interim Chairmen and Secretaries—to its official website and digital platforms.
This is part of the Commission’s commitment to openness, public accountability, and compliance with the Electoral Act and Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties 2022.
