An Enugu State Magistrate Court has ordered the remand of three masqueraders for allegedly flogging and physically assaulting residents during the celebration of the Oriokpa Masquerade Festival in Nsukka.
The accused, identified as Emeka Eze (33), Omeke Uchechukwu (22), and Malachi Nnaemeka (30), were arrested on Tuesday by operatives of the Enugu State Police Command after a viral video surfaced showing the suspects assaulting passersby along Aku Road, Nsukka, on June 22.
They have been arraigned on a three-count charge involving:
- Conspiracy
- Demanding money with menace
- Causing grievous bodily harm
- Police Launch Manhunt for Remaining Suspects
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspects attacked members of the public under the pretense of participating in the traditional Oriokpa Masquerade parade, leaving at least one male victim hospitalised with serious injuries.
- “The three identified suspects were arrested with the support of law-abiding residents, while others involved fled the scene,” said Ndukwe.

The court has adjourned the case to July 31, 2025, for further hearing, as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police has ordered a full-scale manhunt for other masquerade group members still on the run.
Masquerade Tradition or Public Menace?
The incident has sparked mixed reactions across social media, with many Nigerians calling for a review of traditional practices that result in public harassment, forced donations, and physical assault during cultural festivities.
- Residents of Nsukka and other parts of Enugu have raised concerns about masquerade-related violence, especially when such celebrations cross the line into criminal activity.
The Enugu State Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to community safety, urging residents to report illegal activities disguised as cultural practices.
