PDP Crisis: Gov. Peter Mbah Backs South East, NWC, BOT on NEC Meeting, National Secretary Dispute.

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has reaffirmed his full support for the positions taken by the National Working Committee (NWC), Board of Trustees (BOT), and the South East Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) amid the deepening crisis within the opposition party.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday after a high-level closed-door meeting at the Enugu Government House, Governor Mbah threw his weight behind the 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025, emphasizing that the party must resolve its internal disputes or risk losing the confidence of loyal members.

“I am still a member of the PDP, but I’m frankly fed up with the shenanigans that have more or less made the party an endless circus,” Mbah said.

South East PDP Threatens to Review Membership

Mbah reiterated the warning issued by the South East PDP ZEC during their recent zonal meeting in Enugu, where they threatened to reconsider their continued membership of the party if their position on the National Secretaryship is not respected.

  • The South East, and that includes me, reserves the right to review our membership of the PDP if the party fails to put its house in order,” he stressed.

According to Mbah, the PDP South East zone remains firm that the National Secretary position must remain with the zone, and any decision contrary to that will not be accepted.

  • “The position of the South East regarding the National Secretary, as issued in that communiqué, is sacrosanct,” he declared.

Prominent PDP Leaders Present

The meeting was attended by several prominent PDP leaders, including:

  • Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State
  • Senator Adolphus Wabara, PDP BOT Chairman
  • Chief Ali Odefa, South East PDP Zonal Chairman
  • Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, former PDP National Chairman
  • Senator Sam Egwu
  • Iyom Josephine Anenih
  • Senator Ben Obi
  • Hon. Udeh-Okoye

Context: PDP Power Struggle Over NEC and National Secretary

The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflict over the status of the National Secretary and the legitimacy of the upcoming NEC meeting. A faction loyal to Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum is backing the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary and has attempted to replace the NEC meeting with an “expanded caucus” session.

This move was rejected by a majority of the NWC, the BOT, and the South East PDP, who argue that Anyanwu’s return has not been approved by NEC and violates the party’s constitution.
